Our timber
Which woods do you use?
Mainly Burmese teak, mahogany, mango, acacia and suar wood.
Is your timber from natural rain forests?
No. We only use non indigenous timber from carefully managed plantations.
Why is Burmese teak used for tabletops and dining chairs?
Its natural oils make it very stable, so it resists warping, cracking and shrinking. Left untreated outdoors it weathers to a soft silver grey.
What makes suar wood special?
Suar is strong with a striking cross grain, which makes it ideal for live edge slab tabletops that need only basic care. It grows fast on plantations across Southeast Asia, which is why you see so much of it.
Why choose mahogany?
Mahogany has a fine closed grain, carves beautifully and lasts. Its colour ranges from soft pink to a deep reddish brown.
Is mango wood sustainable?
Yes. It comes from mature trees that no longer bear fruit, and the orchards are replanted. It is light but durable.
Where do your pieces come from?
India and Indonesia. Smaller decor items use local village timbers, mostly mango and albizia.
Care instructions
How do I care for teak furniture?
Dust with a soft dry cloth. Wipe spills with a damp cloth and mild soap, then dry. Apply teak oil or furniture wax now and then, and keep it out of harsh sun and extreme heat.
How do I care for mahogany furniture?
Wipe weekly with a damp cloth, then a dry one. Never use abrasive cleaners. Wax at least twice a year.
How do I care for a suar slab table?
Dust with a microfibre cloth and blot spills straight away with a lightly damp cloth, then dry. Fine cracks are a natural feature of slab timber. Wax regularly.
How do I clean mango wood furniture and decor?
Do not apply water directly. Wipe with a slightly damp or dry cloth and avoid silicone and ammonia products. Mineral oil or wax adds protection.
Can I put hot items on wooden furniture?
No. Always use coasters, trivets or heat mats to prevent marks.
What if my furniture gets scratched or cracks?
Buff light scratches with a soft cloth and wood polish, or use a matching touch up marker or wax stick. Small cracks can be filled with wood filler. Timber keeps moving with the seasons, so email info@sotran.co.za for larger splits.
How do I care for my couch?
Vacuum with an upholstery attachment, blot spills with a damp cloth and mild soap, rotate the cushions and keep it out of direct sun. Ask us about Masterguard fabric protection.
How do I care for hide and faux hide rugs?
Vacuum with suction only, no beater bar. Blot spills with a dry cloth, avoid harsh chemicals and rotate the rug now and then. Faux hide can be professionally cleaned; make sure the floor is dry before putting it back.
How do I care for leather?
Blot spills quickly with a dry cloth, avoid harsh chemicals, condition regularly and keep it away from direct sun and heaters.
Patio furniture
What does FSC certified mean?
FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification guarantees the timber in our patio range comes from responsibly managed forests and verified sources. Look for the FSC logo and certificate number on the product and packaging.
Is the patio range sealed?
Yes, with a polyurethane coating. Varnish it once a year to keep the colour and protect the wood.
Driftwood, GRC, bamboo and rattan
What is driftwood and can it go outside?
Driftwood is timber naturally weathered by rivers, lakes or the sea. It is light, durable and happy outdoors or in a humid bathroom. Dust it with a damp cloth; a light coat of hair spray adds protection.
What is GRC?
Glass reinforced cement: cement strengthened with fine glass fibres. It is up to 75% lighter than concrete, weather resistant and can last 50 years or more. Dust indoor pieces and hose down outdoor ones.
Is bamboo furniture strong enough for daily use?
Yes. Bamboo is light, strong and resists warping. Use it outdoors only under cover, and wipe it with a damp cloth.
What is rattan and how do I look after it?
Rattan is a solid, flexible vine, unlike hollow bamboo. Clean it with a soft brush and mild soapy water. Our rattan and bamboo pieces are handmade in Indonesia.
Leather types
What is the difference between genuine, bonded and PU leather?
Genuine leather is real hide and lasts 15 to 40 years. PU leather is fully synthetic and lasts 5 to 10 years. Bonded leather is shredded leather scraps bonded with polyurethane and lasts 2 to 6 years.
Which should I choose?
Genuine leather is the best long term investment because it ages well and can be repaired. PU leather is the better budget choice and outlasts bonded leather.
